Black Hat Brew Works in Bridgewater looks for new location amid growth

Editor’s note: This is part of a series of stories taking a peek inside some of the little craft breweries that have cropped up in the Brockton area in the past few years, where the art and science of brewing meet and the mantra is the fresher the better. From elegant taprooms to old-school casual, from hardcore traditional to wild concoctions like jalapeño cream ale and Ultra Violet Squeeze – there’s something for everyone and plenty of reasons to make a beer lover cheer.

BRIDGEWATER — If you like dogs, a laid back atmosphere and a variety of craft beer styles, then Black Hat Brew Works is definitely for you.

Located at 25 Scotland Boulevard, Unit 1, in Bridgewater, the brewery is known for its flagship, easy-drinking Bridgewater Blonde and its popular Fuzzy Bunny Slippers double IPA.

The brewery was started in 2015 by owner Paul Mulcahy and a few co-owners who are no longer associated with the brewery.

Paul Mulcahy, owner of Black Hat Brew Works in Bridgewater, left, with his wife, Shannon Kawa, on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021.

Originally from Brockton, Mulcahy had been doing some home brewing for a while, and a career in the food processing industry gave him the background he needed to get a craft brewery going.

So Mulcahy opened at the Scotland Boulevard location with the Bridgewater Blonde and the now-popular Blueberry Kolsch, and set to work creating great beer and becoming a staple in the community.
